Lightning Lane is Disney’s paid skip-the-line system.
There are now three types:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass
This lets you reserve multiple rides in advance and throughout the day.
Think of it like scheduling your ride times so you skip the regular line.
Lightning Lane Single Pass
These are individual purchases for the most popular rides.
Examples include rides like:
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- TRON Lightcycle Run
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
These sell out quickly, so planning ahead matters.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass
This is the top-tier skip-the-line option. This pass works once for every ride in the park.
The best part? There are no return times. You simply scan in each ride when you are ready — including both Multi Pass and Single Pass attractions.
These can get pricey, as a Premier Pass will run you anywhere from $129—$449+ per park per day. These sell out too, especially during peak, high-crowd seasons, and often sell out for days on end.
Why Lightning Lane Makes Disney Easier for Families
Without a plan, you could easily spend 4–6 hours of your day waiting in lines.
Using Lightning Lane helps you:
• Ride more attractions
• Avoid peak wait times
• Reduce walking back and forth across the park
• Keep kids happier and less tired
For moms planning the day, it’s one of the best tools you can use.
How Does Lightning Lane Work? (Important to Know Before You Purchase)
Before you purchase Lightning Lane, it’s important to already know which parks you plan to visit on which days. Your ride selections will depend on the park you are visiting.
In each park, some rides are included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass, while a few of the most popular attractions are offered separately through Lightning Lane Single Pass.
Ride availability can change, so you can always check the latest Lightning Lane attractions on the official Walt Disney World Resort website.
Understanding Ride Tiers
The rides included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass are divided into two tiers.
When you make your initial selections, you can choose:
- 1 ride from Tier One
- 2 rides from Tier Two
Because Tier One attractions are usually the most popular rides in the park, it’s helpful to decide which Tier One ride matters most to your family so you can try to secure that one first. (I always have a backup in mind in case I can’t secure our first choice.)
Booking More Rides During the Day
Once you arrive at the park and scan in to your first Lightning Lane reservation, you can immediately book another attraction.
From that point on, the goal is to always have three Lightning Lane reservations booked whenever possible.
Each time you scan into a ride, you can book another one — from either Tier One or Tier Two — depending on availability.
Getting the Most Value From Lightning Lane
To get the most out of Lightning Lane Multi Pass, it’s helpful to schedule at least one ride early in the morning.
This allows you to scan in quickly and start booking additional attractions earlier in the day.
The earlier you begin booking new rides, the more attractions you may be able to fit into your schedule.
The “Burner Ride” Strategy
Some Disney goers use a strategy called booking a “burner ride.”
This means they reserve an early Lightning Lane for a ride they aren’t very interested in riding — usually one that has low demand. They scan into that ride quickly so they can immediately start booking other attractions.
While I understand the logic behind this strategy, I personally prefer to book an early ride that my family actually wants to experience.
On busier days, the burner strategy can sometimes backfire if popular attractions fill up quickly, leaving you with fewer options later.
For most families, simply booking a ride you’re excited about as early as possible is the safest and easiest approach.
Is Lightning Lane Worth It?
One of the most common questions families ask before their trip to Walt Disney World Resort is whether Lightning Lane is actually worth the extra cost.
The answer really depends on your priorities for the day.
Lightning Lane Is Usually Worth It If:
• You are visiting during busy seasons (summer, holidays, spring break)
• You only have one day in a park
• Your family wants to ride as many attractions as possible
• You are traveling with young kids who struggle with long lines
On crowded days, Lightning Lane can easily save several hours of waiting in line, which can make the day feel much less stressful.
Lightning Lane May Not Be Necessary If:
• You are visiting during very low crowd periods
• You plan to rope drop the park and arrive very early
• You are okay skipping the most popular rides
• You prefer a slower, more relaxed park day
Some families enjoy focusing on shows, snacks, and exploring instead of trying to ride everything.
My Personal Recommendation
If your goal is to ride the most popular attractions without spending half the day in line, Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass are usually worth the investment.
For our family, the ability to skip several long lines makes the day feel much more relaxed and enjoyable.
But if you prefer a slower pace and don’t mind waiting, or if rides really aren’t your jam, you may find you don’t need it every day of your trip.
If you decide Lightning Lane is worth it for your trip, here’s the simple strategy I use to get the most value from it.
My Simple Lightning Lane Strategy
1. Choose Your Top 3 Must-Do Rides
Before your booking window opens, take a few minutes to decide which rides matter most to you and your family.
For example, at Magic Kingdom your list might include:
• Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
• Peter Pan’s Flight
• Space Mountain
Having your priorities decided ahead of time helps you book quickly and avoid decision fatigue when reservations open.
It’s also important to remember that some attractions are included in Lightning Lane Multi Pass, while others are only available as Lightning Lane Single Pass purchases.
Before your booking window opens, make sure you know:
- Which Single Pass attractions you want to purchase
- Which rides you want to prioritize with Multi Pass selections
If you’re visiting multiple parks during your trip, this can get a little complicated. It’s helpful to write down your priority rides for each park so you can book quickly when your reservation window opens.
A little preparation ahead of time makes the Lightning Lane process much smoother on booking day.
NOTE: If you have park hopper, you will choose the rides for the park you plan on starting in. Once you scan in to your first ride, your ride selection options will change in your My Disney Experience app.
2. Book Lightning Lanes As Soon As Your Window Opens
Disney now allows advance booking before your trip depending on your resort status.
For guests of Disney resorts, you can purchase and book 7 days in advance for the length of you stay, up to 14 days. Guests staying off property can purchase 3 days prior to their first park day.
The booking window opens at 7:00 am ET on the My Disney Experience app. Popular rides fill quickly, so booking early gives you the best times.
Always purchase your Lightning Lane Single Passes first! These sell out the quickest.
3. Plan Your Day Around Your Ride Times
Once your Lightning Lanes are scheduled, fill in the rest of your day with:
• shows
• snacks
• character meets
• lower-wait rides
This helps your day flow naturally instead of rushing around the park.
You may find it necessary to try and tweak some of your advance dining reservations at this point. Simply go into your My Disney Experience app to do so.
4. Stay Flexible
Ride closures and changing wait times happen often.
If something changes, just adjust your next Lightning Lane selection and keep moving forward.
If you have a big issue and need help, you can always visit a cast member under a blue tent for assistance. These guest services cast members are a lifesaver when you are in a bind and need help.
Disney days go much smoother when you expect a little flexibility.
