Planning our first trip to Walt Disney World felt magical… and completely overwhelming.
I had spreadsheets. I had park plans. I had a packing list longer than my arm.
And yet, once we actually arrived, I realized there were so many little things I didn’t know — things that would have made our trip smoother, less stressful, and honestly a lot more fun.
If you’re planning your first Disney trip, here are the things I genuinely wish someone had told me ahead of time.

The Parks Are Bigger Than You Think
Before our first trip, I imagined the parks like a large theme park.
They are not.
They are massive.
Each park is essentially a small city filled with rides, restaurants, shows, and tens of thousands of people moving around all day. Just walking from one ride to another can take 10–15 minutes.
We easily walked 10–12 miles per day without realizing it.
What I wish I had done:
- Prioritized a few must-do rides
- Accepted we wouldn’t do everything
- Planned realistic walking breaks
Disney is a marathon, not a sprint.
And the more you leave undone, the more reason you have to return to Disney World another time!
Midday Breaks Are a Game Changer
This was the biggest mistake we made.
Our first park day, we stayed from rope drop to fireworks. By 2 PM everyone was hot, tired, and a little cranky.
What I didn’t realize is that the middle of the day is also the most crowded.
Now, my favorite strategy is:
Morning:
Arrive early and rope drop the most popular attractions.
Afternoon:
Leave the park for a pool break, nap, or relaxing lunch.
Evening:
Return refreshed for rides, shows, and fireworks.
It makes the entire trip feel slower and more enjoyable.
You Don’t Need to Do Everything
Before our trip, I felt pressure to maximize every minute.
Every ride. Every show. Every snack.
But the truth is, the best Disney memories rarely come from checking off rides.
They come from moments like:
- Watching your child meet a character
- Sharing ice cream on Main Street
- Riding a favorite ride twice in a row
- Sitting together during the fireworks
Once I stopped trying to “do it all,” the trip became far more magical.
Lightning Lane Strategy Actually Matters
I underestimated how important ride strategy would be.
Disney’s most popular rides can easily reach 90–120 minute wait times during busy seasons.
Learning how to use Lightning Lanes strategically can make a huge difference in your day.
A few simple tips that helped us:
- Book Lightning Lanes early when possible
- Use them for the rides with the longest waits
- Combine Lightning Lanes with rope drop strategy
When used correctly, they can save hours of waiting in line.

Comfortable Shoes Matter More Than Anything Else
I cannot overstate this enough.
Your shoes will make or break your trip.
By the end of our first day, my feet were sore in ways I had never experienced before.
Now I only bring:
- Broken-in walking shoes (my go-to park shoes)
- Lightweight breathable socks
- Backup blister bandages
It sounds small, but being comfortable while walking miles every day makes a huge difference.

Mobile Ordering Will Save Your Sanity
Before our first trip, I assumed we would just walk up and order food.
Not exactly.
Many quick-service restaurants get extremely busy during peak meal times, and the lines to order can get surprisingly long.
Disney’s mobile ordering system allows you to:
- Order food directly through the app
- Skip the long ordering lines
- Pick up your food when it’s ready
Once we started using it, meals became so much easier and faster.
Inside Hack: Mobile ordering can also be a simple way to save a little money. I often order a kid’s meal for myself, and honestly, I find it’s usually more than enough food for a quick park meal. It’s a fast, easy way to keep costs down while still enjoying Disney snacks and quick-service restaurants.
The Best Moments Aren’t Always Planned
The funny thing about Disney trips is that the moments you remember most are often the ones you never scheduled.
For us, it was:
- Riding the PeopleMover at night
- Watching our kids dance during a parade
- Eating popcorn while wandering through the park
- Watching my daughter light up seeing the characters
Planning is helpful — but leaving room for spontaneous fun is where the magic really happens.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning your first Disney World trip, it’s normal to feel a little overwhelmed.
There are a lot of details, a lot of advice online, and a lot of pressure to get everything “right.”
But the truth is this:
Disney trips don’t have to be perfect to be magical.
Focus on a few priorities, leave space to slow down, and let the experience unfold naturally.
Those are the moments your family will remember long after the trip is over.
